I am a professor of international politics at American University in Washington, DC. I have studied and written about politics in Latin America (including Colombia) for several decades. It's funny because when I was 20 years old, I spent a "junior year abroad" in Colombia during the takeover of the Supreme Court building in Bogota and I wrote about this and the Volcano de Ruiz volcano, as a freelance journalist. Now, decades later, my Colombian wife and I have a place in Santa Marta and are looking to spend more time in Santa Marta, Bogota (where she has family), and perhaps in the Coffee Zone (love Pereira).
